(EN) We left The US after a brief delay at the airport  (so they could switch planes). Flew about 10 hours and disembarked at the airport in Frankfurt, Germany. At the advice of friends, we immediately (after first getting lost and driving around in Frankfurt for about 30 minutes trying to get our berrings and get out of the city) left Frankfurt in our rental car. The car was a 4-door Hatchback Seat (pronounced see-aught). I was pretty impressed with this car. Even at 145 Kph on the trip back, the car got great gas-mileage (considering gas was almost $4.00 per gallon it better). Now I understand why so many people in Europe ride bikes.

(EN) We headed south toward Bodensee (Lake Constance) which is right on the Germany, Swiss, Austrian Border. This was about a 4 hour drive by car (I was a bit cautious on my first experience driving on the Autobahn, I kept it to about 120 Kph.)

(EN) We reserved a 2 Bedroom Suite in this Bed-and-Breakfast in a small town right on the shore of Bodensee named Andleshofen. Andleshofen is a small (9 streets total, maybe 150 residents) suburb of Uberlingen. This building was built in the 1600s as a home for the Regional Judge. It was renovated and expanded in 1994. It has a gourmet restaurant on the first floor.

(EN) This was the Master Bedroom. It was pretty nice, with King-Size Bed, feather pillows, Feather Comforters. Our Suite was in the old part of the hotel, and the ceilings are only a little over 6 feet high.

(EN) Most towns and cities in Germany have long histories of which they are very proud. Uberlingen is no exception, and shows it off in their Stadtmuseum (City Museum). This museum was full of historical artifacts, most impressive to me were the pieces of antique furniture.

 (EN) While in Uberlingen, we heard about Insel Mainau, The Flower Island. Mindy said we had to visit it. So off we went to Mainau. Mainau was once the property of the Teutonic Knights. The only remnant of that period is this Teutonic cross that was left behind when the Knights were driven from the island by Swedish invaders during the 30 Years War. This cross was the only thing of value left by the invaders, as it was just too heavy to carry. It now is the first thing that greets visitors to the island as it stands at the entrance to the bridge from the mainland to the island.

(EN) Grand Duke Friedrich I acquired the island in 1853, and being a botany enthusiast, promptly began making the island over in his image. (EN) We then saw the Alt Sloss (old castle) which happened to be the Meersburg Stadtmuseum (City Museum) and open for tours.

(EN) The castle garden had a rather spectacular view of the lake.

EN) Lindau is a harbor town which started on an island, then spread out over to the mainland. The old town on the island is now mainly a tourist attraction. On the way through Lindau to the island we saw this dog waiting patiently for its master. This was a very common sight throughout this part of Germany. We saw many people walking their dogs (almost every dog we saw was extreemly well trained and well behaved). There were usually hooks for dogs' leashes outside every store.

 (EN) This colorful building was pretty close to the center of the Lindau old town (on the island).

Then she said, "Oh well, this will get us there, it will just be the scenic route. And scenic it was. With mountain switchbacks, through ancient forests and over the top of every hill, a beautiful valley with lots of scenic overlooks, of which you can tell, I made good use.

(EN) One of the valleys contained this peaceful mountain lake, and yes, those are the Bavarian Alps in the background.

(EN) We found a place to park the car, and walked through the village in the valley between the two castles. These two stereotypical inn/restaurants were part of the village. Both of the two castles were built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. When he became king, very young, he soon found that he had little power as most of it was in the hands of Parliment. He found that he could do some things without permission from parliment, build castles and put on operas. He almost bankrupted Bavaria building castles. These two were two of the four castles he had under construction when he suddenly and mysteriously died at a young age. One theory is that members of Parliment had him killed to keep him from taking the country down with him.

(EN) We saw and talked to the only Americans we saw on the whole trip here at the castles, and Americans seemed to be everywhere. We took a horse-drawn carriage up the hill to the castle, and over half the carriage load of people were from the U.S.

(EN) Part way up the mountain, we passed this pretty little babbeling brook.

(EN) When we reached the castle, we had about 45 minutes to wait until our tour. We overheard some of those (other?) annoying American tourists talking about some waterfalls so we followed the crowd. About half way up the hill toward the falls, we passed a scenic overlook and I took these two pictures of the other castle.

 (EN) We finally reached the falls (the trail was about a 45 degree incline, no kidding), and this was the view. Here is the falls from above.

(EN) We were not allowed to take pictures in the Castle, so this page and the next three are photos scanned from some of Mindy's postcards. This first is a view of Neuschwanstein which we didn't get to see first hand. You could only see it from an aircraft. Speaking of which, we saw many hanggliders taking off from the top of the mountains above Neuschwanstein.

(EN) This is King Ludwig II's throne room. He only lived in the castle about four months before his death, and his throne was never delivered. The chandelier was almost a ton of brass. The mural over the throne dias was six of the most famous kings of Bavaria. Above that it shows Jesus Christ as the King of Kings.

(EN) Neuschwanstein was a very modern castle, being built in the 1870s it had a central heating system (in Bavaria they don't need AC) as well as hot and cold running water and flush toilets. This was King Ludwig's bed chamber. It was complete with private bath, a library, and a small prayer room.

(EN) The corridor in between the Dining Room and the Secretary's office was an indoor replica of a cave, complete with the dank darkness. It was pretty cool. I wonder how much it would cost to put one in my house? Sorry, we have no pictures of the "cave room" except the ones in our memories. This was his personal secretary's office (any jealous secretaries out there?).

(EN) The entire top floor of the castle was King Ludwig II's personal Opera Hall. Robert Wagner was a personal friend of the King's and Ludwig personally commissioned Wagner to write operas based on various Bavarian legends. Many of the murals on the walls of this castle were depictions of these legends.

(EN) Now we reach the Ausfahrt (exit) of our little journey. This sign is an exit sign on the Autobahn. The last day of our trip we checked out of the beautiful little BnB on the shores of Bodensee and headed back north toward Frankfurt.

(EN) This time we chose to head a little further west than our journey from Frankfurt, get off the Autobahn and drive through the hills and woodlands of the Black Forest. Here is the route we took.

(EN) The Black Forest, in case you didn't know, was the birthplace of the cuckoo clock. We stopped in one small town, and toured their Uhrenmuseum (clock museum).

(EN) This is a much older Astroclock with all wooden parts. Many of the dates (things which only happened once per year) were of religious significance. For instance, it would compute Easter, and perform a crucifixion play with small wooden figures on Good Friday, Then on Easter Sunday Morning, Jesus would arise from the tomb. Because it is so old, this clock is only wound on special occasions to reduce wear.

(EN) Traveling down the park walking paths, we saw this church through the trees. Then we found a small, road-side lunch stand with menus printed in German, French, and bad English.
